Senior Director


Summary The Senior Director, Food Security and Livelihoods (SD-FSL) is responsible for the management, growth and quality of a portfolio of FSL programs, and for SCUS’ general positioning and reputation for US account-funded FSL programs. This portfolio encompasses a set of field-based FSL programs that are supported from SCUS, inclusive of prime and sub development food security activities (DFSAs) and other non-DFSA publically or privately funded FSL awards. In this role, you will be the Team Leader for the FSL Business Line within DHL. charged with designing and supporting programming that improves food and nutrition security and builds resilience for chronically vulnerable populations. What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties) Management Leadership for Quality Programming (35%):
  • Ensure that the FSL team is results-oriented, mission and impact-oriented, maintains constructive relationship with SC globally, and works in a manner that encourages innovation and program quality to maximize impact for Save the Children’s program participants.
  •  Lead, coach, develop and supervise the FSL management support/ award management team, the technical assistance team, and the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team, organizing regular FSL team meetings, and ensure learning, information sharing, and clear roles and responsibilities within the team. Ensure that the FSL team has, understands, and operates according to clear protocols and best practices, but remains flexible, collaborative, and communicates openly within the department, but also across business teams and agency divisions.
  •  Ensure coordination and teamwork between award management, M&E, and technical assistance team members supporting awards, as well as with other DHL or SCUS team members (for example, in the areas of financial management, commodity management, etc.).
  •  Develop and coordinate the FSL team’s relationships with Country Offices, other DHL Business Lines, donor counterparts, and other SCUS Business Teams, pertaining both to new program development and to the management of/ support for existing awards.
  •  Oversee the FSL award management operations, ensuring that award management protocols are clear and that programs are on track. As needed, assist in anticipating and resolving specific award management or donor/ partner relationship issues that may arise.
  •  Serve in a senior representation capacity to donor bureaus/ offices funding these awards as well as partner organizations working on these awards, as needed or when issues of reputational risk arise.
  •  Input into Department-wide strategies, reporting, thought leadership, team management and innovation promotion processes.
Resource Mobilization and Proposal Development Support (50%):
  •  The SD-FSL will lead the maintenance and growth of the portfolio, including new business planning, tracking new and potential opportunities, pre-positioning for anticipated opportunities, and pursuing opportunities strategically, in coordination with the Senior Director, Strategy and Program Development (SD-SPD)
  •  Oversee matrixed, multi-stakeholder, dispersed proposal teams working on individual proposals, in coordination with the SD-SPD. These teams consist of FSL team members, other DHL team members, Portfolio Growth and Performance team members, Country Office team members, and very often Department of Global Health and partner team members. Assign FSL team members to these teams in a manner that maximizes opportunities for successful new business development. This requires close coordination with the SD-SPD, who will support selected DHL new business opportunities (including but not limited to FSL opportunities) as assigned by the AVP
  •  For proposals that are of high importance to the maintenance, growth or strategic position of FSL, lead these proposals directly. This may include serving as proposal director and/ or technical lead and/ or lead writer, depending on the opportunity. Generally, the incumbent will be expected to serve as Proposal Director for several proposals per year, and to serve as Technical Lead/ Lead Writer for at least one strategic proposal per year.
  •  Assess Business Line win rates, growth trajectories, and other metrics that indicate the performance and position of the team and its portfolio. Lead corrective action as needed.
Staff Leadership (15%): Serves on the Hunger and Livelihoods Senior Management Team (SMT) and agency Extended Senior Management Team
  •  Lead, coach, develop and supervise the FSL management support/ award management team, the technical assistance team, and the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team, organizing regular FSL team meetings, and ensure learning, information sharing, and clear roles and responsibilities within the team. Ensure that the FSL team has, understands, and operates according to clear protocols and best practices, but remains flexible, collaborative, and communicates openly within the department, but also across business teams and agency divisions.
  •  Provide performance management, professional development, and supervisory support to direct reports, as well as support to these direct reports in managing their own team members. Coordinate the distribution of the work of the Business Line across team members appropriately
  •  In the event that FSL programs require the hiring and secondment of an SCUS team member to SCI for field-based Chief of Party, Deputy Chief of Party, or other key personnel positions, serve as the dotted line supervisor for these field-based team members.
  •  Facilitate and coordinate skills development for hunger and livelihoods staff
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 10-15 years' relevant experience.
  • Bachelor degree or relevant equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in food security concepts and multi-sectoral programming.
  • Proven familiarity and success with USAID and other donor programming priorities.
  • Experience developing proposals for and/or managing USAID/Food for Peace DFSA, DFAP, MYAP, or DAP awards
  • Demonstrated professional interpersonal communication skills, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Proven experience leading a diverse team of experienced professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluency in French or Spanish.
