- Strengthen people’s ownership of the development agenda through enhanced civic engagement and enabling environments for citizen action;
- Integrate volunteerism into national and global implementation strategies for the post-2015 development agenda; and
- Measure volunteerism to contribute to a holistic understanding of the engagement of people and their well-being and be part of the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Mapping trends and evidence on volunteering for the SDGs: This workstream will help to position volunteer efforts as we scale up efforts for 2030 and beyond.
- Volunteering as SDG accelerator: This workstream will move from what we have learned and success-to-date to understanding how volunteerism might contribute to accelerating progress in tackling critical SDG challenges.
- Next generation volunteering support: This workstream asks whether and how the package of ‘enabling environment’ solutions that governments and their development partners invest in needs to be updated.
- Measuring volunteering for the SDGs: This workstream explores how volunteer measurement efforts might strengthen a people-centered approach to SDGs planning, monitoring and integration.
- (1) The Volunteering DataBase is UNV’s unique offer which will sketch the global volunteering landscape. The database currently covers 120 countries and contains the following data sets: list of legislation; ILO-UNV measurement activities; and VNR reporting. It will be expanded to cover country profiles, and policies and schemes relevant to volunteering. In early 2020, data on the scale of volunteering will be published by ILOStats through the UNV-ILO project and will be accessible from the portal.
- (2) In addition to data and statistics, the portal will feature an Evidence Library which will synthesise evidence products from UNV and other partners focusing initially on cross-cutting thematic areas such as youth, gender, climate change, and inequality and other on-demand topics that will help enhance our understanding of the contribution of volunteering to a specific development topic.
- (3) There will also be a Knowledge Exchange section wherein users will be able to share and submit analysis and evidence products to complement resources available in the portal. Additionally, the portal will use crowdsourcing techniques such as surveys, online consultations, and policy challenges to further generate new evidence and raise awareness.
