The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the permanent New York Advocacy Office Director & UN Representative in New York. The United Nations headquarters and institutions in New York play a critical role in shaping children’s lives and helping to ensure their rights are fulfilled. Save the Children’s ability to engage and influence the UN in New York is central to our aim of creating lasting positive change for the world’s most deprived and marginalised children. The Director of Save the Children’s advocacy office in New York will lead our organisational engagement with the UN in NY, its agencies and delegations, and the civil society organisations active in this arena. He or she will make a key contribution to our global advocacy success in our priority areas, working as an integral member of the Save the Children International team

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Proven ability to lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan, and achieve impact through policy change
  • Experience of creating networks, building partnerships and forging coalitions to achieve change, and an ability to manage diverse relationships to secure new opportunities
  • Proven ability to speak and communicate effectively, and to tailor messages to different audiences including at a political level
  • Excellent political judgement, and ability to manage disagreement and build consensus
  • Experience of successfully operating in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, and knowledge and understanding of key development, human rights, and humanitarian issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UN system, and an ability to navigate it effectively, and translate it for non-specialists
  • Ability to manage individuals and build an effective team, in a way that balances support and challenge
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s values
  • Ability to travel internationally, sometimes at short notice

The Organisation
