The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is represented worldwide. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The External Relations and Communications Section (ERCS) builds and nurtures corporate donor relations, strategically leads the donor resource mobilization platform and conducts coherent communications efforts to highlight the value of volunteerism for peace and development and the contributions of UNV and UN Volunteers. ERCS leads and manages UNV’s corporate strategic partnership relations and alliances with Member States, intergovernmental, non-governmental organizations, financial institutions, civil society, academia, media, and the private sector to promote UNV’s mandate and initiatives, raise awareness and stimulate action to advance UNV’s global agenda and resource mobilization. With a view to promoting and advancing public understanding, ERCS leads the development of advocacy, information and promotional materials publications, websites, social media networks and other innovative means of communication. The intern (Communications Campaign Intern) will have the opportunity to learn about the International Volunteer Day for Social and Economic Development (IVD), mandated by the UN General Assembly to be celebrated each year on 5 December, and about the role of UNV as the UN agency mandated to support and promote IVD celebrations worldwide. The intern will be able to contribute to the success of UNV’s IVD 2020 online campaign by helping in the campaign preparation and implementation. This internship is a perfect fit for a student of communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, political science or international development, looking to expand her/his career in the field of corporate communications.

Under the direction of the Communications Specialist, P4, the incumbent is expected to contribute to: Research and document around the theme of this year’s campaign, drafting stories/examples for the IVD 2020 campaign web page and preparing audio-visual materials. Preparing social media content with visuals and infographics; Organize logistics for the IVD 2020 campaign; Help with outreach to UN agencies and UNV stakeholders for participation and co-promotion of the campaign; Assist with the preparation of an IVD 2020 event in Bonn; Monitor, analyze and synthesize developments, press clippings and reports with regards to the IVD 2020 campaign.

Excellent oral and written communications skills in English; Writing and/or editing experience for online and/or print publications; Previous experience in communications and campaign management and/or organization of workshops/events; Multi-media and social media skills; Research abilities and strong interest and knowledge of global events; Creative open-minded team player with strong initiative and a willingness to learn; In addition to an excellent knowledge of English, fluency in another official United Nations language is an asset. Learning opportunities for the intern General understanding of the work and mission of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, and of the contribution of volunteerism to peace and development effectiveness; Learn about volunteerism globally and in specific country settings as well as the contribution of volunteerism and work of volunteers to build community resilience. Hands-on experience with the preparation and implementation of a UN programme’s online campaign, as well as with its editorial and outreach processes; Insight into issues of modern corporate communications; Experience working in an international organization and in a multicultural environment.

Education: Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation; Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program. Experience: Experience in communications required; Familiar with international development/relations desirable; Familiarity with the UN system in generalLanguage: Proficiency in English; Knowledge of one of the other five official languages of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) would be an asset. Conditions Intern will be given monthly stipend in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy, which applicants should become familiar with prior to signing an UNDP Internship Agreement Form . Where an intern is financially supported by an institution, government or third party, UNDP will, subject to the rules of such institution, government or third party, pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UNDP Stipend. UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship; All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring government or institutions; The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment within the UN System, but to complement an intern’s studies.
