Consultant (Fauna & Flora International)


  • Position: Nature-based tourism Consultant
  • Duration: 15 days, expected from September- October 2023
  • Duty station: Communes nearby Kim Bang protection forest area, in Kim Bang, Ha Nam
  • Reporting to: Kim Bang Project Manager

1. Background

Fauna & Flora International’s (FFI) mission is to conserve threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science, and which take into account human needs. FFI’s strategy to achieve this mission is to work with in-country organizations at all levels to support them in identifying and implementing country led sustainable solutions.

The strategic goal of the FFI Vietnam Primate Programme is to identify primate populations in most need of conservation interventions and provide strategic species-focused conservation in the field, based upon sound science and participation of local communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Fauna & Flora International (FFI) has been working in partnership with Ha Nam government agencies to conserve the second known largest population of Delacour’s Langur (Trachypithecus delacouri) in the forest of Kim Bang District, Ha Nam Province since 2016.

FFI has carried out many activities to ensure the survival of this primate species and the biodiversity values in the forest of Kim Bang, i.e. species and habitat monitoring by Community Conservation Team (CCT); building conservation capacity for local partners and stakeholders, raising awareness for local communities on biodiversity conservation, and facilitating a business plan for sustainable financing. FFI is now recruiting a National consultant to conduct survey and develop plan for nature-based tourism pilot in potential communities living adjacent to Kim Bang forest.

2. Objectives

Purpose of this consultant mission is to develop a plan for piloting nature-based tourism model in potential communes adjacent to Kim Bang protection forest. To achieve this purpose the consultant work plan has to follow:

  • Require 1: Developed pilot needs support for sustainable financing on conservation of Delacour’s langur in Kim Bang protection forest and fair benefit sharing mechanism.
  • Require 2: Identify and explain the potential for nature-based tourism, including wildlife watch the Delacour’s langurs nearby Kim Bang protection forest.

3. Plan for nature-based tourism pilot development

a) Develop outline the plan

b) Review project documents include Ha Nam provincial tourism development plan to 2030 and vision to 2050, and other province/district regulations that relate to tourism development.

c) Conduct and facilitate the consultation meetings with relevant FFI’s partners at national, provincial, district and communal levels. Need develop a set of requirements for each kind of meeting, these requirements should be:

i) Active contribute for Kim Bang forest protection and Delacour’s langurs conservation;

ii) Support for local sustainable livelihood development, especially for women and poor people;

iii) Contribute with the sustainable financing plan and apart of spices conservation plan (SCP) for Kim Bang protection forest;

d) Draft a detailed plan with steps include methods and minimum budget estimation to implement the pilot. A version of PowerPoint presentation should be ready to introduce at the SCP workshop to consolidate the plan before finalize.

e) Finalize plan for nature-based tourism pilot development based on received comments from SCP workshop and FFI team.

4. Time Span

This mission is expected to be carried out in a period of 15 man-days including reporting days. All cost for the field trip shall be covered by FFI. Travel days are not paid.

5. Qualifications and experience

  • University degree (Master is an advantage) specified in one of the following fields: tourism, social science, sustainable development or other related fields;
  • At least 5 years of working experience in the field of community eco-tourism;
  • At least three years of experience in providing consultancy services of suitable community eco-tourism
  • Experience in community eco-tourism plan for Nature Reserve, National Park and community;
  • Experience in community eco-tourism research;
  • Working experience in mountainous and limestone/Kast areas is required;
  • Good in spoken and written English;
  • Strong ability in writing English technical report.

6. Administrative support

FFI will provide the community eco-tourism consultant with the following support:

  • Administrative procedures to work in the field and FFI’s local partners;
  • All local cost for field trip following FFI’s cost norms.

7. Remuneration conditions

  • Remuneration will correspond with the qualifications and work experiences required for the post as referred to in Part 6 of this TOR and FFI’s cost norms.
  • Payment of other related expenses including travel, field works and per diem of the consultant and local guide(s) accompanied will follow FFI’s financial regulations and cost norms;
