OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
In the context of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Programme, and as part of the "Heritage and the city: Promoting sustainable, safe and resilient cities through the protection and conservation of urban cultural and natural heritage in the city" project, a series of activities are being carried out. The launching of the monthly newsletter Urban Notebooks and the creation of an online platform for the collection of good practices are especially linked to this post.
The consultant shall provide support with the research and writing of the content for the monthly newsletter Urban Notebooks, which was recently launched under the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Programme.
Work assignment
Under the immediate supervision of the Deputy Director of the World Heritage Centre (CLT/WHC), the Contractor will be entrusted with the following tasks related to the project entitled "Heritage and the city: Promoting sustainable, safe and resilient cities through the protection and conservation of urban cultural and natural heritage in the city":
Deliverables and timeline
1) Develop contents related to up-to-date practices in the management of the World Heritage Cities to be showcased in the media and webpages of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Programme.
Monthly deliverables:
- 1.1 Drafts of all news items to be presented in the newsletter "Urban Notebooks" according to the format provided by the CLT/WHC for 2 issues, August and September.
- 1.2 30 short tweets on up-to-date practices in the management of the World Heritage Cities.
- 1.3 Write-ups on case studies of World Heritage City management tools and policies for sustainable development to be included in a web platform for good practice examples.
The write-ups will include short and long pieces of text, copy-right-free photos from the World Heritage webpage, and links to other online websites and materials.
The materials shall address World Heritage cities included in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Programme.
The contractor shall ensure that the materials do not include nor link to any kind of commercial, fund-raising or touristic materials.
The contractor shall pay attention to the regional balance of the materials provided, addressing all the different world regions.
Some pieces of information, especially those related to city management tools and policies, can be adapted to fit in the 3 different formats: Newsletter, Tweets and Good Practice.
The contractor will both research for up-to-date information on his/her own, or edit pieces of information received from the World Heritage Centre.

Work Location
The work will be carried out remotely and regular meetings will be held by videoconference.
Expected duration
1st August to 31 September 2020 (15 days of work are expected in August and 6 days in September)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience
- Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of urban heritage conservation, architecture, urban design, heritage management or related area
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience with work related to World Heritage or heritage in general
Skills and competencies:
- Good knowledge of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention
- Excellent research and writing skills in English
- Good analytical and organizational skills
- Good IT skills, including good knowledge of design software, such as InDesign or Photoshop or similar;
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in the United Nations System
- Thorough familiarity with the World Heritage properties and processes
- Very good fluency in both English and French
