OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
The UNESCO World Heritage Convention brings together almost all countries of the world around a common objective of conserving the most exceptional natural and cultural sites. One of the core missions of the World Heritage Centre of the UNESCO Culture Sector (CLT/WHC) is the pursuit of long-term conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development through the fullest and broadest application of the World Heritage Convention by all relevant stakeholders, from site level individuals to global organizations. Key tasks of the Natural Heritage Unit of the World Heritage Centre include the monitoring of the state of conservation of sites by providing technical assistance, and building capacity in the States Parties through a series of projects on the ground that enable bringing together governments, local communities and indigenous people, private sector and many other stakeholders.
Long Description
Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Natural Heritage Unit of the World Heritage Centre and under the direct supervision of the Unit’s Project Officers at the WHC, the incumbent will:
- Plan and implement internal and external strategies for outreach focusing on achievement of the expected results of the regular programme and extrabudgetary projects implemented by the Unit.
- Support the planning, coordination and execution of communication and outreach events and develop products and publications.
Long Description
The incumbent will specifically, in close collaboration with the communication team of the Culture Sector (CLT/CCE):
Web and social media:
- Draft and edit a wide range of materials, including web content, brochures and presentations, and contribute to drafting and production of the World Heritage Review.
- Generate, prepare and edit content for UNESCO and World Heritage Centre websites and social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to ensure material is consistent and up to date.
- Prepare content for dissemination via social media and print while ensuring systematic, timely and excellence in the production and quality of the materials.
- Design and implement creative social media plans in line with the objectives of the projects implemented by the Unit.
- Work to boost followers and engagement on social media and other relevant channels.
- Effectively manage and lead social media campaigns to strengthen awareness and key messages among target audiences at key moments, in collaboration with the communication team of the Culture Sector.
Long Description
- Develop/produce communication and advocacy instruments and materials including briefing materials and press releases in coordination with the Project Officers.
- Keep abreast of digital media trends and identify new opportunities to increase the visibility of the Unit on online platforms. Advise management on appropriate action/responses.
- Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learnt from all the projects’ activities.
- Design and implement innovative campaign assets, such as graphics, animated infographics and other visuals.
- Ensure the effective implementation of advocacy and visibility strategy and plan for content publications, including project specific publications, to be produced in line with the projects’ guidelines.
- Play significant role in the systematic documentation, monitoring and evaluation of the visibility activities of the Unit.
- Build strong networks with key partners within UNESCO and external partners
Outreach events and campaign management:
- Manage flagship events and campaigns including promotion and dissemination of project materials for initiatives and publications, including the World Heritage Map and the World Heritage Review.
- Promote and manage public information campaigns, in close collaboration with the communication team of the Culture Sector.
- Dissemination of communication materials and media mobilization through a regularly updated and populated contact database.
- Preparation and dissemination of newsletter to key stakeholders, partners and target beneficiaries.
- Timely and effective responses to inquiries from public and interested stakeholders.
- Document and widely disseminate success stories, lessons learnt and best practices from the projects in print and electronically, including photos, infographics, short video clips, and documentaries of selected Programme initiatives.
- Provide technical support in the production of audio-visual material, and the organization of regular information campaigns and face-to-face meetings
- Assist the Chief of Unit and Project Officers in any other activity related to the programme.
Deliverables and timeline
- Monthly progress reports on the progress in delivering the outputs related to the work assignment by the end of each month.
- A final report summarizing the activities carried out, achievements, challenges and lessons learnt over the contract period.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- University degree or Master degree in media/communication studies, public relations or other related social sciences with competence to design and develop communication products and multimedia materials.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience at the international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, preferably in culture issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of culture (in particular the World Heritage Convention).
- Demonstrated experience in communicating project implementation actions and results in a Multilanguage context.
- Shares knowledge and experiences and contributes to UN Practice areas
- Ability to implement communications and publications strategies
- Advocates effectively
- Communicates sensitively and effectively across different constituencies
- Excellent communication skills, excellent writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize issues and analyze data to compile and synthesize information in coherent and succinct formats;

- Demonstrated ability to use office equipment with computer literacy in graphic design, publication design, multimedia products development, web design, web content, etc.

- Fluency in English and good command of French
APPLICATION PROCESS
The consultant contract will have a duration of 6 months with a probationary period of 1 month. The appointment is non-career and does not carry any expectancy of renewal or conversion to another contract. Medical health care is not provided.
SELECTION AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS
The total fee for this consultation is USD 19200 payable in monthly installments.
