Overview
About Us
The Department of Global Communications, previously known as the Department of Public Information (DPI), was established in 1946, by General Assembly resolution 13 (I), to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations.
The Department does this through a broad range of activities, including by producing multilingual news and information; using the latest technology, multimedia and social media platforms to amplify the UN message; carrying out communications campaigns on priority issues; and conducting outreach activities with a diverse range of partners.
The Department reports annually to the UN General Assembly’s Committee on Information, which is responsible for overseeing our work and providing guidance on policies, programmes and activities.

Around the World
The Department of Global Communications is represented worldwide through our global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), located in 60 countries and engaging audiences in more than 80 languages. The Centres work closely with other United Nations teams and a wide range of partners to highlight the impact of the activities of the United Nations around the world. They are also the principal source of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located. With their multilingual digital communication products, human interest stories trending across social media platforms, partnerships promoting understanding and support for the United Nations, engagements with media and young people that help raise awareness on United Nations priority issues and observances, the centres are key to adapting global campaigns to the local context, sharing the United Nations message with the people around the world in their own languages. United Nations information centres give a local accent to the voice of the United Nations, bringing us closer to the peoples we serve. Contact us-
