ENVIRONMENT CONSULTANT – SOCODEVI (VCED PROJECT)

SOCODEVI is a Canadian network of cooperative and mutual assistance enterprises which shares its technical expertise and know-how with its partners in developing countries. SOCODEVI office in Vietnam requires the services of an environmental professional for the Cooperative Enterprise DevelopmentProject (VCED). VCED is funded by Global Affairs Canada.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the coordination of the project managers, and along with SOCODEVI’s environmental advisor at headquarters, the Environment consultant will contribute to the implementation of the VCED Project’s environmental strategy through advisory support, training activities, elaboration of tools and environmental studies, and other activities with the VCED local team of specialists and experts, and the partners of the project.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

Complete or update environmental diagnostics of the supported organizations / cooperatives
Directly implement with the support from local project teams on the Project’s environmental strategy and its implementation, including direct involvement (deals with material suppliers, guide and work with farmer group leaders, monitor the progess and solve occurring issues).
Complete environmental analysis or assessments or other forms of environmental studies (for example, “environmental protection plans”) of the activities supported by the Project (including investments in cooperative infrastructures)
Accompany the local project team and the supported organizations / cooperatives in obtaining required environmental approvals / permits from relevant local authorities
Integrate environmental considerations in the monitoring, follow-up and evaluation of the activities supported by the Project, and ensure follow-up on implementation and efficiency of planned environmental practices and mitigation measures
Provide environmental training, advisory support and technical assistance to the supported organizations / cooperatives in their environmental commitment and in their adoption of environmental practices and actions, including for agricultural processing activities and services offered to members
Monitor environmental indicators of the project
Gather environmental data and provide assistance to the completion of annual reports
Develop concept notes and/or proposal for environmental activities
Other functions integral to the position

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION

Master University degree in environmental sciences, natural sciences or other related field

EXPERIENCE

Knowledge and experience of the Vietnamese environmental context in agricultural-related development activities
Minimum of 5 years of experience in integrating environmental concerns in activities of the agriculture sector (horticulture and dairy sectors) with foreign NGOs and/or private enterprises
Minimum of 3 years of experience in the preparation and facilitation of environmental training activities for smallholder farmers in a participatory approach
Experience with agriculture cooperatives and/or farmer organizations
Proven experience in the completion of environmental analysis, assessments or other types of environmental impact studies, particularly for foreign NGOs

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS & BEHAVIOURS:

Excellent knowledge and skills of technology information (Windows Office, Internet, etc.)
Ability to establish and maintain linkages with partners, stakeholders and relevant environmental authorities
Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Vietnamese
Excellent interpersonal skills and team work capacities
Commitment to the mission and vision of SOCODEVI and the Project
Willingness and ability to work with autonomy and with multidisciplinary teams
