Fall 2020 Just Security 2020 Internship

The Just Security 2020 Program at the Stimson Center The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), in collaboration with interested governments, civil society groups, businesses, and international organization partners, has initiated Just Security 2020: Advancing the Recommendations of the Commission on Global Security, Justice & Governance. Co-chaired by Madeleine Albright (former US Secretary of State) and Ibrahim Gambari (former Minister of External Affairs of Nigeria), the Commission released its flagship report, Confronting the Crisis of Global Governance, at the Peace Palace in The Hague on June 16, 2015. Looking toward the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020, it underscored the need for new tools to manage the world's most pressing problems, from violent conflict and climate change to the "hyperconnected" global economy, and stressed the need to build justice as well as security. "Just Security" is not only a matter of fundamental fairness but a way to combat the alienation that increases receptivity to violent extremist thought. Emphasizing the intersection of security and justice in global governance, Just Security 2020 aims to establish a broad-based international coalition of state and non-state actors to pursue key Commission recommendations and related global governance reform. Major activities to be undertaken in 2020 and beyond include:

Convening track 1.5 policy dialogues/multi-stakeholder meetings to promote consensus on priority global governance reform innovations, including the UN75 Global Governance Forum (September 16-17, 2020);
Building a robust research and policy analysis component to prepare background briefs and action reports for each of the multi-stakeholder meetings, track the progress of policy implementation, undertake a new Doha Forum Report on Post-COVID-19 Socioeconomic Response, and complete other studies building on the original Commission Report; and
Standing up a new Platform on Global Security, Justice & Governance Reform,to sustain relationships and promote results of the track 1.5 meetings.

DUTIES Responsibilities for an intern include:

Research, writing, analysis, and editing of program publications
Coordination of program events
Briefings on related events in the Washington, D.C. area
Programmatic and administrative support

QUALIFICATIONS Generally, strong candidates for this position will have the following qualifications:

Interest in the United Nations, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, climate governance, economic globalization, cyber-security, and multidisciplinary approaches to security and justice challenges
Strong research and analysis skills, including writing and editing
Excellent attention to detail
Full-time or part-time availability
