OVERVIEW Parent Sector : Communication and Information Sector (CI) Duty Station: Paris Job Family: Communication and Information Type of contract : Non Staff Duration of contract : From 1 to 6 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : 22-JUL-2020   UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism   OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST Within the framework of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), UNESCO is the custodian agency for the global monitoring of SDG Indicator 16.10.2: Number of countries that adopt and implement constitutional, statutory and/or policy guarantees for public access to information. In this context, UNESCO has been mandated by its Member States to track and report progress on the use of this indicator worldwide.   UNESCO launched in 2020 the SDG 16.10.2 Survey of Access to Information. The data collected through this survey will be used to track global progress towards the achievements of Target 16.10 and will be included in important reporting exercises at the international level, including the biannual Report to the Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and in the annual UN Secretary-General report on SDG progress.   Within this context, and under the general supervision of the Chief of Universal Access to Information Section and the Associate Programme Specialist, the Individual Specialist shall create graphic design and layout for the UNESCO Report on SDG 16.10.2. More specifically, the tasks will be:  
  1. Ensure the graphic design, typesetting and layout of a report (approx. 30 pages), in English, French and Spanish, highlighting the main findings of the UNESCO 2020 Report on SDG 16.10.2 (Public Access to Information). The Report will be a full colour publication in A4 format, and will be enriched with tables, graphs/charts;
  2. Provide to UNESCO two maquettes (in PDF) of proposed cover, back cover and template for internal pages with different design/colour options, taking into account the spirit of Sustainable Development Goals and Access to Information;
  3. Once the design selected by UNESCO, work closely with the UNESCO responsible Programme Specialist for the English version, and incorporate any changes and corrections requested prior to submitting the final Work to UNESCO for approval;
  4. Apply the same graphic design to the two language versions (French and Spanish) of the text, that will be provided by UNESCO in Word format. The graphs and charts will be provided by UNESCO in Words and/or Excel formats and it will be the Individual Specialist’s responsibility to enhance their presentation and formatting;
  5. On approval of the final layout and corrected proofs by UNESCO, the Individual Specialist shall create the final work in vector format, JPG and PDF versions, provided in both high resolution (at least 300 DPI) and low resolution (for online publication);
  6. Submit to UNESCO the complete work with native files including font files. It is the Individual Specialist’s responsibility to ensure that the final deliverable is printable. The original source files of all of the charts and graphs used in the report will also be provided to UNESCO. The Individual Specialist shall ensure that all the designs and their derivatives are fully editable.
  Deliverables :

  • University degree (bachelors or higher).
Experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in graphic design, and/or motion graphics animation.
  • Proven experience in graphic arts, and/or communications.
Competencies and skills
  • Proficiency in print, web and motion design, particularly graphic design for publications;
  • Proficiency in working on the adobe creative suite software (Photoshop, Illustrator, and inDesign);
  • Excellent abilities to deliver creative solutions.
Language skills
  • Excellent knowledge (written and oral) of English
  DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience
  • Experience in Web Development and Content harvesting
  • Experience with the United Nations system and understanding of their functioning and procedures would be an asset.
Language skills
  • Working knowledge of other UN languages will be an asset.
