Job description

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an enterprise owned by the German Government. With a global footprint in over 120 countries, GIZ leverages its regional and technical expertise for local innovation. For over 60 years, GIZ has been working jointly with partners in India. The thematic areas of GIZ in India are: Energy, Environment, Climate Change and Biodiversity, Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development, Sustainable Economic Development. Under its "Sustainable Economic Development" thematic area, GIZ is implementing the project “Economic Empowerment of Women Entrepreneurs” (Project Her&Now) on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. This project supports the Indian Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in improving the framework conditions for women entrepreneurs in India. The four-year project started in August 2018. The project provides advice to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship on how to increase access of women to governmental support schemes and works with training and business development service providers, private sector and civil society associations to provide incubation and acceleration support programmes for women wanting to start businesses and existing women entrepreneurs who want to scale up their businesses. Another important area of action of the project is implementing a film and media campaign under the name "Her&Now" to showcase successful female entrepreneurs and to contribute to changing mindsets around women participating in the economy. The project currently implements in three states of India.

Your tasks

We are looking for an intern to support the project team in all areas of project management and implementation:
  • Assess and document methodological approaches developed by the project (i. e. develop presentations, short briefing papers, articles)
  • Support the project team in project management and implementation (i. e. carrying out research to design project activities, writing terms of reference for tenders, supporting the media campaign)
  • Monitor and analyse relevant policy and economic developments and ongoing initiatives of other donors and organisations in India in the area of women entrepreneurship promotion
  • Contribute to publications and public relations activities of the project by writing and editing articles, blog entries for the website, and other publications (including online publications and social-media channels)
  • Support logistical organisation of online events and carry out administrative duties as required

Your profile

  • University degree in political science, development studies, sociology and related fields
  • Strong understanding of the role of the private sector in the context of social and economic development of emerging economies; knowledge on approaches and specific methodologies of entrepreneurship promotion desirable
  • Good understanding of gender issues and the role of women in India desirable
  • Good knowledge of the German political system and the German development cooperation system
  • Knowledge on and/or experience working in international development, preferably with a focus on India or South Asia
  • Excellent skills in writing concise texts for various purposes (i. e. studies, policy briefs, but also project reports, articles for communication purposes) and to communicate results effectively and clearly
  • Dedication and self-motivation to perform the internship as a home office-based internship

Please be informed that you are only allowed to apply for this internship, if you are currently enrolled as a student or graduated not longer than six months ago from the start of your internship. We pay a monthly stipend of €1.608,- (gross). Depending on the country of assignment a monthly expatriation allowance (gross), predetermined by GIZ will be paid on top.
