International Field Researcher


Position needed: International Field Researcher Place of work: Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW), Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam Line managed by: Senior Technical Adviser and Senior Research Manager Introduction of Save Vietnam’s Wildlife: Save Vietnam’s Wildlife is a national Non-Profit organisation in Vietnam that was established in 2014. Mission: Save Vietnam’s Wildlife works tostop the extinction and champion the recovery of threatened species in Vietnam. Aims:
  • Delivering effective education programs to empower people to take informed action.
  • Working with Government to effect positive, long-lasting change for wildlife.
  • Rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing confiscated threatened wildlife in support of wild populations, as well as demonstrating and promoting good animal welfare.
  • Increasing understanding of conservation requirements of threatened wildlife through rigorous scientific research.
  • Ensuring the wildlife habitats is fully protected and local communities are engaged to protect wildlife.
Introduction of Internation Field Researcher Position: Expected starting date: As soon as possible. Duration: 01 year, with the possibility of renewal. Probation period: 3 months Salary:  To be discussed Holidays: 12 days annual leave following Vietnamese Labour law, plus 10 national holiday days. Hours of work: 8 hours each day and 5 days/week. Any overtime will be accrued and time given off in lieu (TOIL). Accommodation: Will be provided free. Others: Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will provide an airfare to Hanoi, and airfare to home country after completion of contract or, if extending, at end of position. Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will cover cost of the position visa while in Vietnam. Travel for work and food in the field will be paid. Overall responsibilities: To provide technical and direct support to SVW’s conservation research team. The focus of his role is on developing capacity within SVW’s Vietnamese research team. Current research activities are broadly focused on: camera-trapping for mammals in Pu Mat National Park, captive research on pangolins, and monitoring released trade-confiscated pangolins. Supporting the development of grant writing, donor reporting, and technical reporting skills in the team will also be an important responsibility. Specific activities:
  • Developing a mark-recapture trail for monitoring released pangolins
  • Assisting in camera-trap surveys for pangolins, otters, and Owston’s Civet
  • Assisting in the analysis of camera-trap data
  • Assisting donor reporting
  • Identifying training opportunities and workshops for Vietnamese staff and assisting with applications
  • Identifying grant and fundraising opportunities
  • Providing support to Vietnamese staff in technical report writing and grant applications
Essential criteria: Qualifications:
  • At least a bachelors in biology, ecology, wildlife conservation or a related topic
Knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Broad understanding of conservation issues in South-east Asia
  • Experience working overseas, ideally in developing countries
  • Experience working with or in rural communities
  • Experience working in a young, multinational team
  • Experience in project planning, including budget management and monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience writing technical scientific or donor reports in English
  • Ability to use GIS and R
  • Fluent in English
