Internship (3 Months) Public Partnership Division (PPD)

The Division of Public Partnerships (PPD) works to strengthen UNICEF's position as a partner of choice for children's rights among governments and public actors around the world. The division is doing this by connecting UNICEF’s positioning of children in intergovernmental and multilateral fora and negotiations to the engagement with governments and public institutions (including IFIs) as resource, policy and program partners. A key premise for PPD is that the engagement with countries should be based on multiple levels of partnerships, including around resource mobilization and policy advocacy. How can you make a difference? The intern would support the overall work of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) team in charge of issues related to the Middle East as well as related humanitarian and development issues in the region. Working in PPD, the intern would have the opportunity to learn about UNICEF’s work for the cause of children, as well as exposure to the issues related to  multi-literalism of the United Nations system, which will contribute to a career path, develop and refine skills and gain valuable work experience that could help in transition into a job market. Specific tasks could also be tailored taking into account the intern’s interests on particular themes. Duties and responsibilities: I. Geographical focus:
  • Learn by supporting the team in strengthening partnership work related to the MENA region.
  • Learn by contributing to the update on the social and economic trends of the changing environment and update the country profiles of MENA programme countries.
  • Learn by supporting in monitoring changes in social-political dynamics or upcoming major events in the region and conduct geopolitical analysis of the trends that might impact UNICEF’s funding and advocacy efforts.
  • Keep abreast of the UNICEF initiatives including publications released.
  • Provide creative and innovative views on concept papers, strategies etc.
II. UN and intergovernmental:
  • Learn by supporting the preparation of e summary reports of key interagency and intergovernmental meetings that are related to the region and its countries.
  • Learn by supporting the work of the UNICEF Executive Board and United Nations General Assembly meetings September 15-30, 2020.
III. Communication:
  • Support in developing visualization of data, and graphics, for funding trends for Gulf donors.
  • Support in designing of power-point and other presentation formats as required.
Key deliverables:
  • Learn by supporting the economic analysis especially in developing visualization of data, and graphics, for funding trends for Gulf donors.
  • Assist in research for accurate and evidence-based data and information for briefing notes for OED.
  • Support in keeping the donor profiles updated.
  • Support in designing of power-point and other presentation formats as required.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
  • A university degree (Bachelor's or higher) in international relations, Middle Eastern studies, social sciences, law or related field.  Study/experience in human rights and related work would be an asset.
  • Proven ability to synthesize information and communicate it simply and effectively: Superior writing and research skills; Strong analytical skills; Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to operate in a diplomatic environment, using tact and judgement.
  • Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment. Competencies required: commitment, embracing diversity, integrity, teamwork, and drive for results; communication, judgment, planning, setting standards and monitoring work, analytical and conceptual thinking.
  • Knowledge of office computer systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet research.
  • Experience in negotiation and advocacy an asset.
  • Understanding of UNICEF’s mandate is a must, UNICEF experience an asset
  • Fluency in English (both written and oral) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
  • Duration: 1 August – 30 October 2020Duty Station: Teleworking/UNICEF New York Headquarters Salary/Payment: There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. Interns working at NYHQ, must have a valid G-4 visa prior to their arrival. The UN will not register an intern who is on a different type of visa (i.e. visitor's visa).  Interns employed at NYHQ who are not on a G-4 visa must take immediate action to obtain a G-4 visa and register with the UN accordingly.  No visas will be facilitated by UNICEF. Insurance: UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with PPD. Living Conditions and Working Environment: The intern is full time (40 hours per week).  The UNICEF Headquarters will re-open on 1 August 2020 for a limited number of essential employees initially.  Selected candidate will work remotely until further notice.
