IOM’s operation in Viet Nam is concerned with the welfare and quality of life of the Vietnamese people, particularly migrant and mobile populations. The mission focuses on safe migration and mobility.
IOM's Mission in Viet Nam is based in Ha Noi with a sub-office in Ho Chi Minh City, and experienced and dedicated staff assisting the government and the people of Viet Nam in the field of migration. IOM first began operations in Viet Nam in 1987 and works under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. IOM has close working relationships notably with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development - MARD the Viet Nam Women’s Union, and others, and has carried out numerous project activities throughout the country.
Working together with IOM's partner agencies on the United Nations (UN) Country Team in Viet Nam results in synergies and a greater development impact for the people. In this way, IOM plays an integral role in the One UN Initiative in Viet Nam, an initiative that owes its success to the strong leadership role taken by the Government of Viet Nam, a committed United Nations Country Team, and a supportive donor community. The goals of the One UN Initiative in Viet Nam include an enhanced relevance and coherence of the UN in Viet Nam, increased development and aid effectiveness, and ensuring efficiencies and cost savings.
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration. It works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners around the world. IOM is dedicated to supporting both governments and migrants in promoting humanitarian and orderly migration. The IOM Constitution recognizes the link between migration and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to the right of freedom of movement. IOM works towards practical solutions for migration problems, providing humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, and with partners to promote international cooperation on migration issues.
