The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role which trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. The Position
ICRAF Viet Nam country office is seeking for the dynamic Market and agricultural value chain specialist cum project deputy coordinator to base and work for office in Ha Noi with frequent traveling to project sites in Vietnam. The position is created as deputy coordinator of the SRA (financed by ACIAR; 2019-2020) on coffee sustainability in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. This position is also created so that she/he will get involved as deputy coordinator of the Nestlé-IDH project, financed for 3 years (2019-2021), on coffee intercropping and water management in the Central Highlands under the supervision of the Vietnam country coordinator and the coordinator of this Nestlé Project.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the coordinator of the SRA and Nestlé project to provide overall project leadership, ensuring effective implementation of research and development activities, preparation of annual work and financial plans, communication, reporting, and building/enhancing partnerships;
- Support the coordinator in coordinating all partners in the delivery of project activities, ensuring that partners adhere to scientific quality by using scientifically sound research methodologies, applying standard data collection techniques, and ensuring high quality data analysis;
- Provide proactive scientific and management leadership in value chain and market research and development activities on coffee, pepper and fruit trees through working with local and international stakeholders of these commodities, as well as relevant local government officials;
- Provide proactive scientific support in on-farm and value-chain surveys on coffee, pepper and fruit agroforestry and socio-economic research through working with local research and extension partners, international partners (Australian and CGIAR, Nestlé and CIRAD), partners of the coffee and pepper private sectors involved in extension work, as well as relevant local government officials;
- Lead the development of training and extension materials and training sessions in collaboration with local research and extension partners, international partners (Australian and CGIAR, Nestlé and CIRAD), partners of the coffee and pepper private sectors involved in extension work, as well as relevant local government officials;
- Take part in the development of full proposal for future project to be funded by ACIAR on coffee and pepper sustainability in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam and in any other proposals dealing with agricultural value chains and markets.
- Take charge of supervising and management of staff (researchers, research assistants, field technicians) reporting to the position;
- Support the coordinator to ensure efficiency in the utilization of project resources and effective delivery of outputs;
- Help prepare annual reports and other high-level communication materials required by ACIAR, Nestlé, IDH and ICRAF;
- Contribute in reporting to the ACIAR-RPM and Nestlé Nestcafé Plan on matters pertaining to the project, including planning, communicating outputs, and reporting;
- Liaise with ACIAR country manager in Vietnam on matters pertaining to the project.
- Liaise with Nestlé-Nestcafé Plan and IDH country managers in Vietnam on matters pertaining to the project.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Vietnamese national with PhD degree in agricultural economics, agrobusiness and/or related fields
- Proven record of international publications
- At least five years of relevant experience, preferably related to value chain, market, agrobusiness, and certification studies in agricultural products in Vietnam
- Experience in working with not-for-profit organizations, government institutions and private sector.
- At least three years of experience in project management.
- Experience in coffee and/or pepper sectors will be a major plus.
- Well organized; able to meet deadlines
- Having good command of English
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in multi-cultural teams.
- Demonstrating effective written and verbal communication skills
- Generating creative, practical approaches to overcome challenging situations
- Computer literate
- Good knowledge of negotiations
- Good understanding of time management
- Multitasking person and able to work under pressure
- Open to receiving feedbacks from others
- Possess a high degree of flexibility and adaptability to various situations.
Terms of offer
- Initial two-year contract with a competitive salary.
- The contract is subject to 3 (three) months probation period, assessment of performance and availability of resources
