Medical Translator (Newborns Vietnam)


We are Newborns Vietnam (NBV), a small but well-established UK registered charity and we are licensed to operate as an NGO in Vietnam. Our mission is to ‘save newborn lives’ by reducing neonatal mortality (newborn deaths in the first 28 days of life) and promoting the health of newborn infants and their mothers. As an organisation we have a single-minded vision, and we act on it every day with commitment and passion. We support each other and work as one determined and ambitious team to end preventable newborn deaths in Vietnam. We are looking for a Medical Translator to support our Programme Director to deliver UK neonatal post graduate training for Vietnamese nurses and doctors working with neonatal intensive care units, newborn resuscitation courses (NLS) and Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC). This is an opportunity to be part of a small but highly motivated team, we want you to build our capacity to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, from the Ministry of Health, public hospitals and our sponsors. Your work with international standard training materials and UK Doctors and Nurse Educators, will also give you the opportunity to expand your specialist medical knowledge. You must be a proficient medical translator with relevant qualifications, Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI), an Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition or similar. This requirement may suit a doctor retired or practising with paediatric, neonatal or obstetric experience.
Core Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Programme Director provide document translation and interpretation, translating English to Vietnamese and vice versa, for the following;
  • medical training lectures for neonatal postgraduate training for doctors and nurses, course manuals, text books, presentations, typical topics, our training programmes, our mission, making the case for funding support
  • letters/schedules for training programmes to official departments
  • Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) for our core programmes with public sector partners, training events, and translation.
Person Specification
The Medical Translator is an important enabling role for our work to end preventable newborn deaths in Vietnam. The post would suit an experienced translator or a medical professional or retired professional with excellent English. You must:
  • identify with the charity’s cause,
  • have a relevant degree level qualification - linguistics degree would be an advantage, being certified Medical Interpreter (CMI), would be an advantage,
  • have experience of interpreting for English speaking teaching sessions – ability to translate accurately and express the candidates’ feedback to the instructor,
  • be proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Excel,
  • have good interpersonal skills and able to work effectively in a diverse team,
  • be willing to travel within Vietnam,
  • be flexible and the willing to work outside normal office hours.
Working Hours 
Flexible, can be at our office in Hanoi or working from home – in total we estimate on average 60 hours per month, with less in some months, and more in others.
