Mines Advisory Group (MAG)

About MAG The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a global humanitarian and advocacy organisation that finds, removes and destroys landmines, cluster munitions and unexploded bombs from places affected by conflict. MAG also provides education programmes, particularly for children, so people can live, work and play as safely as a possible until they clear the land. Since 1989, MAG has helped over 18 million people in 68 countries rebuild their lives and livelihoods after war. We believe it is unacceptable that millions of people are trapped in danger and poverty for years after wars end. We aim to help communities get on with their lives, and get back their futures.   Our vision Our vision is a safe future for women, men and children affected by violence, conflict and insecurity. People should live in communities where their rights are upheld, with dignity and choice, and free from fear of mines, unexploded bombs and the impact of small arms and light weapons.   Our mission Our mission is to save lives and build safer futures. We do this by clearing landmines, cluster munitions and other unexploded bombs and by reducing the impact on communities of small arms, light weapons and ammunition.   Our history In 1989, two brothers – Rae and Lou McGrath – felt compelled to do something to protect people from the crippling and often fatal threat of landmines. Their solution was to set up MAG, which they ran from an office near Cockermouth in England's Lake District. More than a quarter of a century later, this lifesaving work continues and MAG has evolved into a major international operation. We have been pioneers in the development of approaches that put communities at the heart of decision-making, new detection methods and mechanical demining. In 1997, MAG shared the Nobel Peace Prize for its role in banning landmines. Discover more about our history.   Our Values

MAG in VIETNAM  Vietnam remains one of the world’s most contaminated countries, with an estimated 800,000 tons of unexploded bombs left over from the war that ended more than 40 years ago. MAG’s ultimate goal in Vietnam is to reduce the risk of landmines and unexploded bombs and release land to support socio-economic development.   Why we work in Vietnam Although a considerable effort has been made by humanitarian organisations and the Vietnamese government, unexploded bombs continue to place communities at risk and restrict access to safe land required for housing, agriculture, infrastructure, and community development. As a consequence of intense fighting and heavy bombardment during the war, the provinces where MAG works are among the most affected by cluster munitions and other unexploded bombs in Vietnam.   How we help MAG has been clearing unexploded bombs in Vietnam for 20 years, firstly in Quang Tri in 1999 and then expanding to Quang Binh province in 2003. We encourage members of the community to report dangerous items to MAG’s free hotline number or to MAG’s community liaison teams through village meetings. We will then clear the items, and responding to these requests helps to greatly relieve the psychological impact on communities as well as remove the immediate physical danger. MAG also conducts risk education sessions during village meetings to ensure that communities containing unexploded bomb contamination are briefed on how to stay safe in contaminated areas. As a result of MAG’s work, millions of square metres of land have been released to communities for productive use, such as agriculture, schools, medical clinics, roads, community flood protection facilities and many other development projects. MAG supports the Government of Vietnam in achieving its national development goals. MAG also helps build the capacity of national mine action authorities in areas where we work.   Contact  MAG (Mines Advisory group) Suite 3A, South Central, 11 Peter Street, Manchester, M2 5QR, United Kingdom T: +44 (0) 161 236 4311 F: +44 (0) 161 236 6244 Email: info@maginternational.org For any fundraising enquiries or to give a donation over the phone please use the contact details below: T: +44 (0)161 238 5466 Email: fundraising@maginternational.org     Kênh kiến thức kỹ năng, phát triển bản thân, hướng nghiệp, blog nhân sự
