VN011 National consultant to facilitate organization of webinar workshop on Multi Drug Resistance for TB (MDRTB) to the National TB program (NTP) Viet Nam
Background:
Viet Nam is among the 30 countries globally with the highest TB burden, with an estimated incidence of 182 cases per 100,000 and MDR/RR-TB is 9.1 cases per 100,000 population (WHO TB report 2019). The estimated proportion of TB cases with MDR/RR-TB was 3.6 % among new TB cases and 17 % among previously treated cases. The estimated number of MDR/RR-TB cases among notified pulmonary TB cases was about 4,900 (3,800-6,000), with a rate of successful treatment for MDRTB of 68 % (2016).
To support Viet Nam in coping with the MDRTB issue, the annual regional Green Light Committee (rGLC), coordinated by WHO and supported by Global fund, organizes country visits to review the MDRTB program and provide recommendations for strengthening the MDRTB program. The report from rGLC in 2019 highlighted many gaps and challenges remaining in the MDRTB program, including:
- an estimated 98% of MDR-TB are facing catastrophic costs due to TB;
- the budget for drug-resistant TB (PMDT) still heavily depends on external funding;
- enrolment for treatment is still low;
- limited interventions to prevent initial loss-to-follow-up;
- loss to follow up for MDR/RR-TB patients is still high (15% in 2016 cohort);
- and treatment of MDR/RR-TB in the private sectors remains largely unknown.
The 2020 rGLC country situation assessment is vital to support the NTP to address these gaps. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a country visit form rGLC is impossible this year. Therefore, the rGLC is organizing a webinar workshop, in place of a country visit, to provide support for the MDRTB program. The webinar is scheduled for 4-5 June 2020. There are approximately 40-50 participants across the NTP program who will attend the webinar. To facilitate preparation for the webinar, preparation for documents, including translation of webinar materials, support conducting the webinar, including interpretation during the webinar, the WHO CO is seeking a STC who can provide support for this specific task.
