National Intern “SFM Project” (Technical) (GIZ)


As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. We work in a variety of fields and support our cooperation partners in designing strategies and meeting their policy goals. GIZ Viet Nam is currently engaged in three priority areas:

1) Vocational training;

2) Environmental policy and sustainable natural resource use;

3) Energy.

The Forests and Biodiversity Programme is implementing 02 projects in Viet Nam, including:

1. The project “Upscaling of Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Certification in Viet Nam” (SFM)

The project “Upscaling of Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Certification in Viet Nam” is financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with counter-part funds from the Vietnamese Government. The implementing agencies are the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Central Project Management Board and the Provincial Project Management Boards of Quang Tri, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces.

The project’s overall objective is: “Progress has been made in the transition to sustainable, climate-friendly forest management”.

The project is expected to achieve the three key outputs during the 3-year period from October 2021 to September 2024 as follows:

  • Output 1: The legal and institutional prerequisites for the transition to sustainable and climate-friendly forest management are established.
  • Output 2: The capacities of relevant actors in the forestry sector for the transition to sustainable, climate-friendly forest management are strengthened.
  • Output 3: Information and instruments for financing the transition to sustainable, climate-friendly forest management are available to relevant actors in the forestry sector.

2. The project “Management of protected areas, which unite different ecosystems” (SFF)

During the bilateral government-level negotiations between Vietnam and Germany in 2021, the Vietnamese side proposed a new project to support Vietnam in managing protected areas uniting different eco-systems. As this proposal will only be discussed and considered in the next government-level negotiations in 2023, the German side agreed to provide a support package from the Study and Experts Fund to assist in the implementation of related activities with VNForest until a potential new project is discussed.

The support package focuses on protected areas, which unite different eco-systems with the goal of improving the information base and management capacity of complex conservation areas along the following 3 main outputs:

  • Output 1: The legal and policy framework for the management of protected areas that unite different ecosystems is analyzed.
  • Output 2: The information basis for the new project, proposed by MARD on Protected areas which unite different ecosystems (government negotiations in 2021) has been created.
  • Output 3: Standardized SMART tool is operationalized.

The project is offering an internship opportunity as below:

  • National Intern “SFM Project” (Technical)
  • Duty station: Ha Noi, Viet Nam
  • Duration: for 6 months, starting from October 2022

The National Technical Interns is expected to learn & practice by assisting the project team in the following tasks:

  • Provide assistance in organization of the internal meetings, project events (preparation, taking minutes, coordinating the participations, logistic arrangement of the field mission etc.)
  • Assist to the research activities, including elaboration of ideas/concepts, term of reference, data collection, desk research, drafting reports; and presentation of the specific topics during technical exchanges within the team)
  • Support in quality assurance of technical activities and deliverables
  • Join the thematic meeting, workshops organized by partners and report back to the teams
  • Provide translation services, if required (English and Vietnamese)
  • Support in monitoring and implementing the project activities
  • Perform other duties and tasks as required.

Minimum requirements:

  • Vietnamese nationality
  • Currently undertaking (at least third year of study) or has recently completed postgraduate/ bachelor studies in forestry, environment, economics or related majors no longer than six months from the date of graduation
  • Being able to arrange his/ her timetable to take a full-time internship (40 hours/ week)
  • Having an interest in the forestry sector, in particular timber trade and sectoral development policy
  • Good understanding of the forestry sector, timber trade and sectoral development policy is an asset
  • Previous experience in international development cooperation is an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Vietnamese
  • Strong MS Office, organizational and analytical skills
  • Highly motivated to learn and to contribute to a sustainable forestry sector of Vietnam in an international setting
  • Highly responsible, flexible, goal-oriented and constructive as a team member.
