Operation Smile

ABOUT US

Operation Smile has provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for those born with cleft lip and cleft palate. With more than three decades of expertise, Operation Smile creates solutions that deliver free surgery to people where it’s needed most. As one of the largest medical volunteer-based nonprofits, Operation Smile has mobilized thousands of medical volunteers from a wide range of medical specialties from more than 80 countries. Operation Smile engages public-private partnerships to advance health care delivery, train local medical professionals to provide surgical care for patients in their communities, donate crucial medical equipment and supplies, and increase access to surgical care so that everyone living with cleft is treated.

Our Mission

We estimate that there are millions of children waiting for care in the 34 countries where we work. The majority of these children are unable to receive the medical care they need because it is too costly, far away, or specialized. Because of this, being born with a cleft condition can be fatal. If a child survives, they may face bullying and social isolation. Through our expertise in treating cleft lip and cleft palate, we create solutions that deliver safe surgery to people where it’s needed most.

Our Commitment to Comprehensive Care

Surgery is the first step in repairing a cleft condition, it can immediately improve a child’s ability to eat, breathe and speak. After surgery, we provide comprehensive care based on each child’s needs including dentistry, speech therapy and psychosocial support. This increases their likelihood of living a normal life, attending school and pursuing a brighter future. We’re committed to treating the whole patient because it’s the right thing to do. Find out how we’re providing the highest quality of surgical care to every child, everywhere.

Our Vision

We envision a future where health and dignity are improved through safe surgery.

When we meet families affected by cleft who live in some of the most impoverished communities in the world, we’re reminded of the transformative effect surgery can have on the lives of people like Dede and his daughter Clara.

Our Approach

With your help, we’ve built the local capacity to provide surgery and dental care for 19,000+ children each year. We know that people in low resource environments are more than capable of revolutionizing the delivery of care and creating solutions to the problems their people face. All they need are the resources to make it happen. Help us provide essential items to our teams around the world.
We currently provide world-class cleft care in more than 30 countries supported by more than 6,000 volunteers from 60 countries. For more information about our approach:  Click here
