Background

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU-Nepal is hosted by the Patan Academy of Health Sciences, and in Indonesia we exist in partnership with the Eijkman Institute as the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Programme (EOCRU). As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991. OUCRU’s vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals where we work, and to the countries as a whole where we operate: Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal.  All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at our host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care throughout Southeast Asia. OUCRU employs approximately 320 people across Viet Nam and has an average annual budget of USD 12mil. Please see more information on OUCRU website: www.oucru.org The main research interests for the Hanoi office are antimicrobial resistance and influenza. As part of our work on antimicrobial resistance we are partnering with the National Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology to develop community-based interventions to change the way antibiotics are currently used, in order to reduce the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. We are looking for a Research Assistant – Statistics/Data Science with experience using statistical software for managing and analyzing data.

Job summary

·         The Research Assistant – Data Science/Statistics will manage data and analysis for several large population-based studies, with a major focus on antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance. This will involve extraction and merging of health facility data, maintenance of study databases, monitoing of data quality and feedback, extraction of data, data cleaning and preparation, and statistical analysis. The post holder will also support other researchers within the unit working on quanitative research projects, and contribute to training and skills development workshops. There will be opportunities to conceive new initiatives and projects to expand statistics and data science research in the unit – particularly in areas that are associated with OUCRU biomedical research interests. ·         The Research Assistant will work closely with the OUCRU Hanoi Research Coordinators. They will be personable, organised, enthusiastic, and highly motivated. They will have good attention to detail, and be able to work independently as well as in a team.

Key responsibilities and tasks

-          You will be working in a team to implement research activities under the guidance/mentorship of the Senior Epidemiologist and Senor Data Scientist based in OUCRU Hanoi.  This involves: -          Support the development of electronic data capture platforms using REDcap, ODK or EpiCollect; -          Support field-testing of data collection processes; -          Manage the importation of data, and extraction of health facility records; -          Provide quality control measures to assure of high quality, accurate data; -          Extract variabes for anlaysis where required; -          Clean data in preparation for analysis; -          Perform analyses using statistical software (R or Stata); -          Liaise with others for input into projects; -          Review literature to provide context for the research, and write up the results in reports and research papers; -          Travel to provinces to set up and implement research projects; -          Draft project protocols, and write up summaries of project activities; -          Provide input into the OUCRU website and other publications; -          Help with training activities as needed.

Selection criteria

Essential criteria -          BSc degree, preferably with a background in data sciences, statistics, epidemiology, or pharmacy -          Excellent spoken and written Vietnamese and English -          Excellent data management skills in R, Stata, SQL, Python etc. -          Experience in quantitative data coding and analysis -          Experience providing quality control assurance for data management processes -          Highly organized -          Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, and yet be a team player Desirable criteria -          MSc degree, preferably with a background in data sciences, statistics, epidemiology, or pharmacy -          Experience in statistical analysis -          Experience managing and linking large volumes of data -          Experience of developing and using electronic data capture platforms such as REDcap, ODK, or EpiCollect -          Desire to interact with and work with a range of local communities
