Technical Expert – Automotive (IECD)


Job description

Background

Since 2007, IECD has developed qualified vocational training programs in the electrotechnics and automotive sector, through the Seeds of Hope program. The program was first launched in Lebanon and was then replicated in Egypt, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Congo. It has successfully launched its intervention in Vietnam since 2017. The project is entering 2024 in its new chapter with the development of a new innovative short course training focusing on automotive skills. This training aims at bridging the gap between existing training for underprivileged students and the market’s needs for employability skills.
The program would like to achieve the following objectives:
  1. Support the most vulnerable students so they gain confidence to operate as young professionals at a company that offers long-term professional prospects.
  2. Give trainees the interest for the future / innovative skills needed in a fast-changing economy and the ability to become versatile, adaptable professionals thanks to an innovative teaching method, the strong involvement of professionals within the school and combined individual and collective projects.
  3. Offer stable and quality job opportunities to as many students, with decent salary conditions, in positions that they would not have accessed without the training.

Main tasks

Currently the project is searching for a technical expert who can support the project team and the partner schools to carry out main tasks as below. This consulting mission is a 3-month full time consulting mission.

Timeline

Phase 1: Employers and partner school visits
  • Partner school visit: Meeting with the team project and visit of the partner school facilities in which the training will take place and meet the school education team (School Dean, Head of automotive department and teachers).
  • Employer visits: Conduct 10 visits to potential employers (garage) to draw the list of technical skills required for the students in the current market and identify gap with current curriculum.
  • Job profiles: Identify 3-4 “typical” job profiles that the student can apply for at the end of the training and the main job criteria.

Phase 2: Develop Development of the short course training curricula
  • Curriculum mapping: Based on the review of 1/ Existing curriculum at partner school 2/ Employers needs 3/ Other curriculum existing in other regions, schools, countries, the expert is expected to formalize a recommendation of modules to be implemented and developed in the frame of the 120 hours short course training and set up a list of equipment to implement the training.
  • Curricula development: With the support of a pedagogical expert, adapt an existing curriculum or outline a new training curriculum that meets the requirement of the labor market in the field, using competence-based approach.
  • With the support of a pedagogical expert, develop the entrance and evaluation framework, entrance/evaluation content and entrance/evaluation table in line with a competence-based approach.
  • Participate in meetings with relevant stakeholders (Private sector companies in Automotive, the partner schools’ Automotive Department, Academic Affair, etc.) to discuss, provide solutions for technical issues and advocate for application in the school.

April – May 2024

Phase 3: Technical equipment and workshop
  • Elaborate a workshop proposal for the project: renovation and equipment to be purchased in order to implement the curriculum designed.
  • Support the project team in purchasing the needed equipment, including price/contract negotiation if possible.
  • Review and advice on the integration plan of provided equipment.
  • Provide advice to partner schools on how to rearrange their practical workshops to ensure the safety of teaching and learning activities and to optimize effectiveness.

  May – June 2024
OPTIONAL: Conduct one training session for the project teacher on the developed curriculum: IECD will recruit a technical teacher who will provide training for students once the project is launched. But before, the consultant expert will train the trainer on the developed curriculum.  

Minimum qualifications of the technical project expert

Education: At minimum, a bachelor’s degree in automotive engineering or a related field.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in the automotive field.
  • Previous experience with teaching or training would be a plus.
Competencies:
  • Technical expertise in the automotive field.
  • Ability to coordinate and work with people from different backgrounds.
Language:
  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading and writing);
  • Fluency in Vietnamese.
