Area of Selection:

This position is open to applicants eligible to work in Vietnam who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Hanoi. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Hanoi at own expense.

Job summary 

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service is a world-wide network of professionals dedicated to advancing Canada's global commerce. These professionals work with government and business to identify business opportunities as well as obstacles to trade so that they can act on them for the benefit of Canadian companies. 

As a member of the Trade Commissioner Service, the Trade Commissioner will contribute to advancing Canada’s global commerce by, among others, developing and sharing knowledge of the marketplace; providing service, advice and information to clients; building relationships with clients and local contacts; doing troubleshooting as well as planning and executing events. 

This sector specialist will play a key role in supporting clients and colleagues across the Government of Canada by capitalizing on expanding opportunities in the agriculture and agri-food sector. 

Essential Qualifications 

Education: 

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in international relations, international economics, business, commerce, international trade or international law, or an acceptable combination of post-secondary education and work experience 

Language: 

  • Excellent proficiency in English (reading, writing and speaking)
  • Native fluency in Vietnamese (reading, writing and speaking)  

Experience: 

  • At least three (3) years of work experience in the private sector and/or in an international organization in Vietnam
  • Experience in developing and maintaining a network of business and government contacts
  • Experience in conducting business development in Vietnam 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of international business, trade and investment practices internationally and in Vietnam
  • Knowledge of the structure of Vietnamese government ministries and agencies, as well as the private sector
  • Knowledge of the Vietnamese business organizations and associations 

Abilities: 

  • Ability to organize work to meet conflicting demands and to function effectively in a high-stress environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to initiate, plan, undertake research and analysis on trade and investment-related issues
  • Ability to solve problems and determine potential solutions independently
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships within the team and with colleagues, supervisors and clients
  • Ability to use and manage social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn)
  • Ability to lead projects
  • Ability to use effectively the Microsoft suite of products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Asset Qualifications 

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following skills and knowledge 

Language: 

  • Proficiency in French (reading, writing and speaking) is desirable

Experience: 

  • Experience in providing strategic advice to clients about doing business in Vietnam
  • Experience in developing, planning and coordinating trade events or business missions
  • Experience working in the agriculture and agri-food sector in Vietnam 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of the Canadian economy and  business environment
  • Knowledge of the agriculture and agri-food sector in Vietnam and opportunities for Canadian companies 

Conditions of Employment 

  • Legally permitted to work in Vietnam
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally
  • Willing and able to work overtime, often on short notice
  • The appointment of the successful candidate will be subject to Medical Clearance and Reliability (security) Status Check (RS) obtained by Management.
  • The appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a one (1) year probationary period.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate in a cover letter (in no more than 2 pages) how they meet the education and experience factors listed in the essential and asset qualifications. Candidates must explain how they meet the required experience by providing concrete examples. Resumes may be used as a secondary source to validate the experience described in the cover letter. Failure to demonstrate how you meet the screening criteria (essential and asset education and experience) will result in the application being rejected. Candidates who are missing information or submit incomplete information will be screened out. 

Candidates screened in will be contacted for further assessment, including: a personal interview with a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant’s knowledge, abilities, competencies and personal suitability for the position. In addition, tests may be conducted to assist the selection board in assessing the applicant’s qualifications, skills and language ability. Reference verifications shall be conducted as a part of the hiring process.
