Owston’s Civet Programme Coordinator


[ENGLISH] Aims:
  • Delivering effective education programs to empower people to take informed action.
  • Working with Government to effect positive, long-lasting change for wildlife.
  • Rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing confiscated threatened wildlife in support of wild populations, as well as demonstrating and promoting good animal welfare.
  • Increasing understanding of conservation requirements of threatened wildlife through rigorous scientific research.
  • Ensuring the wildlife habitats is fully protected and local communities are engaged to protect wildlife.
Working time: Permanent position. Expected starting date: Immediately Salary: 1000 USD/month gross salary, including contributions to social insurance. Duration: 1 year, ability to renew. Introduction of Owston’s Civet Programme Coordinator: In April 2019, SVW, in collaboration with the IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group, ran a conservation planning workshop for the Endangered Owston’s Civet. The result was a 10-year conservation strategy for the species, with priority activities focused on site protection, the illegal wildlife trade, and the species’s conservation breeding programme. SVW is now looking for an early to mid-career conservationist to help deliver the conservation strategy for Owston’s Civet in Vietnam. The successful applicant will focus on field/in-situ activities for this species, as well as liaise with programme partners in Vietnam. The successful applicant will work for SVW and receive technical support from the IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group. Subject to funding, there will be opportunities to attend relevant international trainings and workshops as part of the job. Overal Responsibilities: Assist in the coordination and delivery of the conservation strategy for Owston’s Civet in Vietnam. Help maintain connections and communication channels between SVW, project partners, the Vietnamese government, and the IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group. The first year will focus on delivery of activities focused on illegal wildlife trade and its impacts on Owston’s Civet; illegal hunting and trade of Owston’s Civet around Bi Doup National Park and other priority sites, impacts of the civet coffee and civet meat/farming industries, and the online trade in Owston’s Civets. Roles:
  • Lead in the design and implementation of an assessment of civet coffee farms in Central/South Vietnam and their impacts on Owston’s Civet populations
  • Lead in the design and implementation of research on illegal hunting and trade in Owston’s Civets around priority protected areas including, but not limited to, Bi Doup National Park and Pu Mat National Park
  • Collate and review Owston’s Civet records from Vietnam on an ongoing basis, engaging with partners already monitoring wildlife trade (ENV, TRAFFIC, WCS); maintain a database of records, including trade records (both legal and illegal trade)
  • Assist in the production of annual and quarterly reports, budgets and workplans
  • Lead on the production of meeting minutes from engagements with stakeholders, including quarterly meetings of the Owston’s Civet working group and the Vietnamese government
Essential qualifications and skills:
  • Vietnamese nationals only
  • Must write and speak advanced level English (technical English)
  • Proven experience in delivering species conservation projects
  • Proven experience in writing technical reports
  • Educated to at least BSc level in conservation/ecology/biology/natural resource management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proactive attitude to work and communication
Desirable skills:
  • Previous field experience in Pu Mat NP/Bi Doup NP/Northern Highlands
  • Previous experience in wildlife trade investigations or research
